1. The elephant, the largest living land animal on earth has interested man from time immemorial. It immense size, strength and intelligence has played a very important role in the economy, culture and religion of the country where it is found. Over the past 40 million years, more than 600 species of elephants have roamed the earth. Changes in climate and vegetation caused the extinction of many elephant species. The growth of human civilization also added to their suffering. Today only two species are alive – the African elephant and the Asian elephant. They not only inhabit different geographical regions, but also have distinct physical characteristics. Asian elephants are smaller in size than the African elephants. They are more easily tamed than their larger and wilder African counterparts. In fact humans have used the docile Asian elephants for over 5000 years as beasts of burden, in warfare, and in ceremonial activities.

2. The present system of education does not teach us the dignity of labour. A student is not taught or trained to do things with his hands. Manual or physical labour finds no place in education. Educated young men are fit only to be clerks in offices. They look down upon manual labour. They consider it below their dignity to work with their hands in fields or factories. Vocational education is the need of the hour. We need more and more technicians, engineers and doctors. But, the number of vocational institutions – Engineering and Medical Colleges, Polytechnics and ITI’s is limited. A large number of young men and women, who can do well as technicians, are deprived of technical or vocational training. The present system of education gives too much importance to English. At many places, it is the medium of instruction. English may be an international language. It may have rich treasures of science and literature. But it can never be our national language. Education must be imparted in the mother tongue. This will save much talent of the country from going waster.

(ii) What is the need of the hours ?
(iii) What is vocational education ?
(iv) What should be the medium of instruction in educational instructions ?

3. In 1976, the FAO started the Project Tiger to help India save the three Indian crocodiles from extinction. The surveys revealed that there were less than 200 gharials, while the mugger was better off and the salt water crocodile was in a bad shape with its dwindling numbers and a few hundred left. Crocodiles had been killed in thousands for their skins. Tribals and other local people collected their eggs for eating. Dam projects and cutting down of forests were changing their habits so fast that there was a danger of them disappearing altogether. Why save crocodiles ? As master predators and scavengers, crocodiles keep the water system clean. They raise the genetic quality of the animals they feed on, they aim for the weak, the sick and the injured. Like the tiger in the forest, the crocodiles are at the top of teh pyramid of wildlife in rivers, swamps and lakes. Without them, nature becomes severely unbalanced and unhealthy. For example, if crocodiles are killed off in reservoirs the destructive catfish becomes a menace to commercial fisherman who catch carp and tilapia. Each bee takes its proper place and does its own work. Some go out and gather honey from the flowers; others stay at home and work inside the hive. The
cells which they build are all of one shape and size, and no space is left between them. The cells are not round. They have six sides. It is not safe for children to handle bees. Bees have a painful sting that they use in their defence.

6. One of the things that distinguishes man from other animals is the power of speech. While it is true that most animals and birds can utter cries which indicate emotion, anger, fear, affection, their range of sounds is very limited, and they are not capable of expressing more complicated emotions. On the other hand, man can express a very wide range of ideas and emotions through speech. Words are only symbols to which special values and meanings have become attached by general agreement. The same object, consisting of printed pages and  a cover, is called by a French speaker livre, by an English speaker book, and by a Hindi speaker kitab, the object is the same in each case, but in each linguistic community a different word to describe it has been agreed upon. Other symbols may be used instead of linguistic ones : a red light is used to indicate danger; a policeman’s upheld hand tells us to stop; a forefinger held to the lips warns us to be quiet; but these substitutes are fairly few in number and therefore, cannot be used except in very limited circumstances.

Used in all bakery products, prepared foods, sauces, soups, spices, cereals, dairy foods, meats, poultry. It is also an extraordinary effective food preservative, retarding the growth of spoilage by micro-organisms and making food storage possible long before refrigeration. How much salt is necessary for human consumption ? Medical experts agree that everyone should practice some reasonable ‘moderation’ in salt consumption. For the average person, a moderate amount might run from 4 to 10 gm a day, or roughly half to one and one-third teaspoons.
