Q. 1. Why are some substances biodegradable and some non-biodegradable ?
Ans. Biodegradable substances are degraded in nature by organic processes. The substances which are degraded by the action of enzymes secreted by micro-organisms and become a part of environment. But non-biodegradable substances do not get decomposed in their life cycle. Their complex nature tightens their molecules and enzymes do not have any affect on these.
Q. 2. Give any two ways in which biodegradable substances would affect the environment.
(i) Biodegradable substances in large amount pollute the environment. These become the source of foul smell but ultimately help in the formation of simple compounds and absorb microbes
(ii) Biodegradable substances provide a breeding ground to many diseases. It increases the number of harmful microbes in nature. Also they finish garbage and help in keeping the environment clean.
Q. 3. Give any two ways in which non-biodegradable substances would affect the environment.
(i) Non-biodegradable substances do not decompose. They are formed by different chemical substances from industries and mix with soil to harm environment. They add to garbage and become breeding grounds for vectors of various diseases.
(ii) They mix-up with food chain and because of biological magnification of pesticides and harmful chemicals they effect reproduction of top consumers and they gets seriously affected.
Q. 1. What are trophic levels ? Give an example of a food chain and state the different trophic levels in it.
Ans. The various steps in a food chain where transfer of food takes place are called trophic levels. Producers formed by green plants form first trophic level in food chain.
• Producers have first position in food chain. If we eat plants, then there are only producers and consumers. There are many consumers in a food chain of carnivores.
Q. 2. What is the role of decomposers in an ecosystem ?
Ans. Decomposers play important role in an ecosystem. They possess saprobic method of nutrition.
They use dead bodies as their food. They break complex organic matter into simple inorganic compounds. Peals of fruits and vegetables, rotten fruits, biodegradable waste, waste of cows and buffaloes are decayed by decomposers and are easily mixed in environment again. Decomposers convert complex organic substances into simple inorganic substances which mix with the soil and are reused by the plants.
Q. 1. What is ozone and how does it affect an ecosystem ?
Ans. Ozone is a molecule formed by three atoms of oxygen which is layered on the upper part of atmosphere in the stratosphere at a height of about 16 km, which protects Earth from the ultraviolet radiations coming from sun. U.V. radiations are extremely harmful to all human beings. It causes skin cancer. In case of the complete depletion of ozone layer around the earth, the U.V. radiations from sun will enter the atmosphere of earth without any hurdle and will adversly affect ecosystem. Ozone is constantly decreasing in the atmosphere since 1980. Ozone affect the ecosystem by following ways:
(i) Less rainfall due to change in temperature
(ii) Affect on crops like rice.
(iii) Affect on water life.
(iv) It damages immune system of human beings and causes skin cancer.
(v) Increase in chances of ecological imbalance.
(vi) Mutation in microbes leading to their destruction.
Q. 2. How can you help in reducing the problem of waste disposal ? Give two methods.
Ans. Waste disposal is very harmful for all human beings because it not only spreads uncleanliness but also becomes a major cause of many diseases. Following two methods can be followed to deal with the problem of waste disposal :
(1) Recycle-Paper, plastic, metals, rags, etc. should be seperated from waste disposal and should be recycled. By recycling paper and clothes, deforestation can be avoided. Plastic should be reused again and again.
