Q.1. Why is the lawyer sent to New Mullion? What does he first think about the place?
Ans. The narrator is a lawyer. He is sent to New Mullion to serve summons on a person named Oliver Lutkins. He first thinks about the place to be a sweet and simple village. But he is shocked when he finds it dirty and unromantic.

Ans. The lawyer goes to New Mullion. There a hack driver befriends him. He offers the lawyer in searching for Oliver Lutkins. He takes him to a number of places. Infact, the hack driver is Oliver Lutkins himself.
Q. 3. What does he say about Lutkins?
Ans. The hack driver says that Lutkins often borrows from others. But he never pays back. He is not bad at heart. But it is hard to make him part with his money.

Ans. Bill tells the lawyer that Lutkins has a mother. They have a farm house three miles north. He says that his mother is a real terror. She is about nine feet tall and four feet thick. But she is as quick as a cat.

Ans. No, The narrator is not able to serve the summons that day. However, he comes again to New Mullion the next day with another person. This time he is able to serve him the summons as the other person recognizes the hack driver as Lutkins.

Ans. Lutkins is a hack driver in New Mullion. He is a cheat. He borrows money from different persons. But he never pays them back. He is able to cheat the narrator also. But he is a cheerful and friendly person.

Ans. The lawyer reached New Mullion. There he came across Lutkins. But the lawyer did not recognise him. The lawyer told him that he had come to meet Lutkins. At this Lutkins made a plan to befool him. He told him that his name was Bill and he would help him in finding out Lutkins.
Q. 2. Lutkins openly takes the lawyer all over the village. How is it that no one lets out the secret? (Hint Notice that the hack driver asks the lawyer to keep out of sight behind him when they go into Fritz’s.) Can you find other such subtle ways in which Lutkins manipulates the tour?
Ans. Yes, Lutkins manipulates the tour cleverly. Now where does he let the lawyer go first’to enquire about the man he is looking for. Lutkins himself goes in. Then he comes out with the news that Lutkins left the place only five minutes before. In fact, he talks very confidently and is able to befool the lawyer.
Q. 3. Why do you think Lutkins neighbours were anxious to meet the lawyer?
Ans. Lutkins had been duping the lawyer since morning. All the people of New Mullion had enjoyed this fun. But Lutkins’ neighbours had missed this chance. So they were anxious to meet the lawyer.
Q. 4. After his first day’s experience with the hack driver the lawyer thinks of returning to New Mullion to practise law. Do you think he would have reconsidered this idea after his second visit ?
Ans. After his first visit the lawyer was much impressed by Lutkins and all other people of New Mullion. He found them very helpful, simple and loving. But on his second visit he was totally disillusioned when he saw that the hack driver was himself Oliver Lutkins. He found them no more truthful and simple. He found them very cunning. I think he surely shall have given up the idea of practicing law at New Mullion.
Q. 5. Do you think the lawyer was gullible? How could he have avoided being taken for a ride?
Ans. Yes, the lawyer was gullible. He could not see through the tricks of Lutkins. He was befooled by the other villagers also, including Lutkins’ mother. If he had met some people alone, he could have avoided being taken for a ride.
