What do you learn about Natalya after reading the chapter “The Proposal” ?
Ans – Natalya is the heroine of the play ‘The Proposal’. She is 25 years old and still unmarried. It causes a worry to her father. Natalya wishes that somebody should love her and propose to her. He father calls her ‘a love sick cat’. She is very quarrelsome. Lomov comes to propose her but she starts quarreling with him over the ownership of a land. Lomov leaves her house with anger. When she comes to know that he had come to propose her, she starts crying. She asks her father to bring Lomov back. When Lomov comes back, she again start a quarrel with him on question of dogs. Her father puts Natalys’s hand in hands of Lomov. He announces that they are engaged to each other. Natalya becomes happy but she again started a quarrel with him.
Q2. What is the theme of the play The Proposal?
Ans – ‘The Proposal’ plays the lifestyle of Russian landlords during 19th century. The farmers work over land and landlords led a life of comfort. They led an ideal life in the play. They quarreled over petty things. In the play Lomov and Natalya first quarrel on the piece of land. She again quarrel over the qualities of dogs. Her father also join this quarrel form her daughter side. This play shows the burden of parents due to unmarried daughter. Chubukov, Natalya’s father, curses himself for being the father of Natalya. This is the perfect play for show the social lifestyle of landlords and their common problems.
