In the summer of 1880, a baby girl was born in a small town in Alabama. Her name was Helen Keller. His parents loved him very much. One day the girl became ill and she have high fever, all the members of the family felt that the girl might not survive.
But Helen survived but the problem was that she was not the same after the illness as before. Later her mother learned that Helen could not speak or hear. The girl was a little older now and she often cried and hugged her mother. Helen had closed within herself, her behavior had also changed. Helen started going wild. Seeing all this her parents look for a teacher for her, then Miss Sullivan, a young teacher agreed to help Helen learn to see the world. Miss Sullivan gave Helen a doll and her chant “D_O_L_L”. One day teacher asked Helen to put her hand in running water. Then, he wrote W_A_T_E_R. Suddenly Helen understood that W_A_T_E_R meant something wet, running over her hand. She understood that words were the most important things in the world. Words would tell her everything she wanted to know.

लेकिन हेलेन जीवित बच गई थी परंतु समस्या यह थी कि बीमारी के बाद या पहले जैसी नहीं थी कुछ तो था जो परिवार को पता नहीं चल रहा था। बाद में उसकी मां को पता चला कि हेलेन बोल और सुन नहीं सकती।
बच्ची अब थोड़ी बड़ी हो चुकी थी और वह अक्सर रोती थी और अपनी मां के गले लग जाती थी। हेलन अपने भीतर ही बंद हो चुकी थी उसका व्यवहार भी बदल चुका था। हेलेन जंगली होने लगी। वह किसी को अपने बालों में कंघी नहीं करने देती थी। उसके कपड़े हमेशा गंदे रहते थे। वह अक्सर गुस्से में रहती थी। उसके माता-पिता ने यह सब देख कर उसके लिए एक शिक्षक की तलाश की तो मिस सुलिवन, एक युवा शिक्षिका, हेलेन को दुनिया देखना सीखने में मदद करने के लिए सहमत हुई। मिस सुलिवन ने हेलेन को एक गुड़िया और उसका मंत्र “D_O_L_L” दिया। उसने अपनी उंगलियों से हेलेन के हाथ में शब्द लिखा। शहेलेन ने अपने शिक्षक की नकल की और D_O_L_L भी लिखा, लेकिन उसे समझ नहीं आया कि वह क्या कर रही है। एक दिन उसकी शिक्षिका ने हेलेन को बहते पानी में हाथ डालने को कहा। फिर, उसने W_A_T_E_R लिखा। अचानक हेलेन समझ गई कि W_A_T_E_R का मतलब कुछ गीला है, जो उसके हाथ के ऊपर से दौड़ रहा है। वह समझ गई कि शब्द दुनिया में सबसे महत्वपूर्ण चीजें थीं। शब्द उसे वह सब कुछ बता देंगे जो वह जानना चाहती थी।
