Describe the character-sketch of Stepan Stepanovitch Chubukov.

Answer – Stepan Chubukov is a wealthy and greedy landowner who is eager to arrange a suitable marriage for his daughter, Natalya. He is a very hypocritical and hot-headed man. At first, he is overly sweet and welcoming to Lomov when he arrives, but this friendliness quickly disappears when he gets into arguments with Lomov over land and dogs. His behaviour reflects the play’s satire on status, property and economically advantageous marriages. He is quick to anger and eagerly joins in petty quarrels. However, when he thinks the marriage is falling apart, he gets anxious and forces the couple together, showing his practical and opportunistic nature.
