Explain any two limitations of Advertising.
Answer – Advertising is paid, impersonal presentation and promotion of ideas, goods or services by an identified sponsor. Its defining features are payment, impersonal communication and an identified sponsor.
Merits: wide reach; repeated messages can strengthen confidence; expressive use of images, sound and words; low cost per person reached when the audience is large; information about alternatives; support for competition and wider demand.
Limitations: less persuasive for complex individual needs; little immediate feedback; limited flexibility after the message is released; difficulty attracting attention among many advertisements. Total campaign expenditure can be high even where cost per contact is low.
Common objections: advertising adds to cost; may undermine social values by promoting materialism; may confuse buyers; may encourage purchase of inferior goods; some messages offend taste.
Evaluation: these objections concern misuse or unsuitable campaigns, not every advertisement. Truthful information can help comparison, and higher sales can spread fixed costs. Advertising cannot permanently rescue poor quality. Its value depends on accuracy, targeting, social responsibility and whether benefits justify costs.
