Explain any two relief/remedies available to consumers under Consumer Protection Act.
Answer – A consumer generally buys goods or hires services for consideration, including approved users or beneficiaries. Resale and commercial-purpose purchases are generally excluded, subject to the statutory self-employment livelihood exception.
Complaints may be brought by an eligible consumer, a recognised consumer association, the Central or State Government, the Central Authority, one or more consumers with the same interest, or the appropriate legal representative or guardian in permitted cases.
Grounds: defective goods; deficient services; unfair or restrictive trade practices; overcharging; hazardous goods or services; and relevant product-liability claims.
Reliefs: remove defects or deficiencies; replace goods; refund the price or charges; pay appropriate compensation; discontinue unfair practices; stop sale of hazardous goods; withdraw hazardous goods; issue corrective advertisements; pay suitable costs and other relief authorised by law.
The remedy depends on the established facts and the competent forum's order. Evidence of purchase, representations, loss and prior communication strengthens a genuine complaint.
