Summary in English
In this chapter the author tells about her grandmother. He tells that his grandmother was terribly old, it seems that her face had a criss cross of wrinkles. She always wear white spotless clothes. Her one hand was usually at her back in order to balance her stoop and other hand was telling beads of her rosary. There was a very close relationship between the author and his grandmother. She used to awake him up and dressed him for school. They go to school together because the village temple was attached to school where grandmother read scripters. While returning home his grandmother used to fed the village street dogs. The author’s grandmother also help him in his studies. She always sang prayers in an mild voice. A major change occured when they shifted to city. The author started to go in a English medium school in a motor bus. In that school there was no study about Gods and scriptures. Now she could not help him in his studies. When author announced that he is learning music in his school. Grandmother became very offended . Because she thinks that music was for lower class people. When author started to go in university, he used to live in a different room, now they rarely talk to each other. Grandmother spend her whole day in singing prayers and on spinning wheel. At evening she fed sparrows, it was the happiest half hour for her. When author went to abroad for higher studies his grandmother came to drop him at station, but didn’t say a word and kissed her forehead. When he came back after years his grandmother did not seem one day older. At that night she sang prayers with beating a drum for many hour’s. Next she had a mild fever and she said that her end was near. She said that she didn’t want to waste her time in talking to you and she started prayer. After some hours, the rosery fell from her lifeless fingers and she was dead. A lot of sparrows collected around her dead body and then narrator’s mother threw some pieces of bread to them but they didn’t eat it and flew away.

इस अध्याय में लेखक अपनी दादी के बारे में बताता है। वह बताता है कि उसकी दादी बहुत बूढ़ी थी, ऐसा लगता है कि उसके चेहरे पर झुर्रियों का एक क्रॉस क्रॉस था। वह हमेशा सफेद रंग के बेदाग कपड़े पहनती हैं। उसका एक हाथ आमतौर पर उसके पेट को संतुलित करने के लिए उसकी पीठ पर था और दूसरा हाथ उसकी माला के मनके बता रहा था। लेखक और उसकी दादी के बीच बहुत घनिष्ठ संबंध थे। वह उसे जगाती थी और स्कूल के लिए कपड़े पहनाती थी। वे एक साथ स्कूल जाते हैं क्योंकि गाँव का मंदिर उस स्कूल से जुड़ा होता था जहाँ दादी शास्त्र पढ़ती थीं। घर लौटते समय उनकी दादी गांव के गली के कुत्तों को खाना खिलाती थीं। लेखक की दादी भी उसकी पढ़ाई में मदद करती हैं। वह हमेशा मृदु स्वर में प्रार्थना गाती थी। जब वे शहर में शिफ्ट हुए तो एक बड़ा बदलाव आया। लेखक ने अंग्रेजी माध्यम के स्कूल में मोटर बस में जाना शुरू किया। उस स्कूल में देवताओं और शास्त्रों का कोई अध्ययन नहीं होता था। अब वह उसकी पढ़ाई में मदद नहीं कर सकती थी। जब लेखक ने घोषणा की कि वह अपने स्कूल में संगीत सीख रहा है। दादी बहुत नाराज हो गईं। क्योंकि वह सोचती है कि संगीत निम्न वर्ग के लोगों के लिए था। लेखक जब विश्वविद्यालय में जाने लगे तो दूसरे कमरे में रहते थे, अब वे आपस में कम ही बात करते हैं। दादी अपना पूरा दिन प्रार्थना गाने और चरखा चलाने में बिताती हैं। शाम को उसने गौरैयों को खाना खिलाया, यह उसके लिए सबसे खुशी का आधा घंटा था। जब लेखक उच्च शिक्षा के लिए विदेश गया तो उसकी दादी उसे स्टेशन छोड़ने आई, लेकिन उसने एक शब्द भी नहीं कहा और उसके माथे को चूम लिया। सालों बाद जब वह वापस आया तो उसकी दादी एक दिन बड़ी नहीं लग रही थीं। उस रात उसने कई घंटों तक ढोल बजाकर प्रार्थना की। आगे उसे हल्का बुखार हुआ और उसने कहा कि उसका अंत निकट है। उसने कहा कि वह आपसे बात करने में अपना समय बर्बाद नहीं करना चाहती और उसने प्रार्थना करना शुरू कर दिया। कुछ घंटों के बाद, उसकी बेजान उंगलियों से गुलाब गिर गया और वह मर गई। उसके मृत शरीर के चारों ओर बहुत सारी चिड़ियाँ इकट्ठी हो गईं और फिर कथाकार की माँ ने उन पर रोटी के कुछ टुकड़े फेंके लेकिन उन्होंने उसे नहीं खाया और उड़ गए।
