Ans – When a new stamp is issued, stamp collectors buy some stamps. They use them to mail envelopes to themselves on the very first day of the sale. The postmark proves the date. Such envelope is ‘a first-day cover’.

Ans – When Charley reached on the third level, there were fewer ticket windows. Light was dim. Rooms were smaller. Everyone in the station dressed like 1890s. A newsboy had copies of a newspaper ( the world ) that had not been published for years. It was a June 11, 1894 edition.

Ans – Charley gets lost on the second level. A doorway leads him to a corridor, he has never seen before. It goes turning left and slanting downward. Then the tunnel turns sharp left. Here he goes down a few steps. He finds that he has come on the third level of the Grand Central Station.

Q1. Describe Charley’s experience at the third level.
Ans – When Charley reached on the third level, there were fewer ticket windows. Light was dim. Rooms were smaller. Everyone in the station dressed like 1890s. A newsboy had copies of a newspaper ( the world ) that had not been published for years. It was a June 11, 1894 edition. Charley go toward the ticket window. He decided to buy two tickets for Galesburg. He wanted to go there with his wife. But then he found that only old style bills were accepted there. But Charley had new style dollars.
Q2. How does Charley reach the third level ? Most Important
Ans – One day, Charley got late at his office. He wanted to go home quickly. He decided to take the subway from the Grand Central Station. He was to catch his train from second level. When Charley reached there, he got lost in wrong corridor. He kept walking in corridor which went left and slanting downwards. At the end, he went down a short and he found himself on the third level. Here everything was different. Here everyone dressed like 1890s something. When he went to the ticket window, he found that only old style bills were accepted here.
Q3. What does the third level refer to ? Do you think that it was a medium of escape for Charley ? Why ?
Ans – In the story, we find 19th century and modern century existing side by side. The Grand Central Station has two levels where modern currency is used. There is also a third level where old style currency is used. The third level is merely a fantasy that exists in Charley’s mind only. It is his fantasy for escape. His psychiatrist friend, same is right when he calls it ‘a waking dream wish fulfilment’. Charley visit the third level is all a fantasy. He takes it for a reality and plans a journey to Galesburg. He exchanges his new bills of 300$ for old style bills. But he never find the third level because it is existed in his fantasy only. So we can say that it was a medium of escape for Charley in his fantasy.
