Democracy : –

Meaning : Democracy comes from a Greek word ‘Demokratia’. In Greek ‘demos’ means people and ‘kratia’ means rule. So democracy is rule by the people.

Definition : Democracy is a form of government in which the rulers are elected by the people.

Abraham Linchon’s definition : “Democracy is a rule of the people, for the people and by the people.”

Features of Democracy : –

Important features of Democracy are as follow :

1. Major decisions by elected leaders : Rulers elected by the people take all the major decisions.

2. Free and Fair electoral Competition :  Elections offer a choice and fair opportunity to the people to change the current rulers.

3. One Person, One Vote, One Value :  This choice and opportunity is available to all the people on an equal basis.

4. Rule of Law and Respect  for Rights :  The exercise of this choice leads to a government limited by basic rules of the constitution and citizens’ rights.

Arguments for Democracy/ Merits of Democracy : –

(i) A democratic government is a more accountable form of governments.

(ii) As democracy is based on consultation and discussion. Therefore,  Democracy led to improvement in quality of decision making.

(iii) Democracy enhances the dignity of citizens.

(iv) Democracy is better than other forms of government because it permits us to correct its own mistakes.

Arguments against Democracy : –

(i) Leaders keep changing in a democracy. This leads to instability.

(ii)  Democracy is all about political competition and power play. There is no scope for morality.

(iii)  So many people have to be consulted in a democracy that it leads to delays.

(iv)  Elected leaders do not know the best interest of the people. It leads to bad decisions.

(v)  Democracy leads to corruption for it is based on electoral competition.

(vi)  Ordinary people don’t know what is good for them; they should not decide anything.

Other Important facts : 

(i) In october 1991 General Pervez Mushharraf led a military coup in Pakistan. In 2002, he issued a Legal Framework Order that amended the constitution of Pakistan.

(ii) China’s parliament is called National People’s Congress. It has nearly 3000 members. There is only one party rule i.e Chinese Communist Party.

(iii) Zimbabwe got independence in 1980.
