Ans – Three factors causing exploitation are as follow :

(i) Limited Information : In the absence of information about different aspects of products like price, quality, condition of use etc. the consumers are liable to make a wrong choice and loss of money.

(ii) Lack of Supply : Due to under development of industries there is a shortage of supply. This gives rise to increase in the price of product.

(iii) Illiteracy and ignorance of the consumers : Lack of consumer consciousness exploits consumers. A consumer must always  check the MRP, expiry date and manufacturing date and then buy it.


Q9. Explain in brief the main objectives of Consumer Protection Act, 1986.

Ans – The Main objectives of Consumer Protection Act, 1986 are as follow :

  • Protection of Consumers: The primary objective is to protect consumers from hazardous goods, deficient services, and unfair trade practices.
  • Promoting Consumer Rights: The Act emphasizes six consumer rights, including the right to safety, information, choice, representation, redressal, and consumer education.
  • Consumer Redressal: To provide a simple, inexpensive, and fast mechanism for resolving consumer disputes.
  • Regulating Trade Practices: To curb and control restrictive and unfair trade practices.

Ans – Various ways by which a consumer is exploited are as follow :

(i) Sale of adulterated goods : This is very common in food items and could prove to be highly injurious to one’s health.

(ii) Use of false weighing scale : This is also seen many times where seller use false weight in order to gain profit.

(iii) Deceptive Pricing : Very often traders charge high and deceptive prices from their consumers than the prescribed retail price.

(iv) False advertising : Making deceptive and misleading claims in the advertisements of the products.

Ans – Rights of consumers in India are as follow :

(i) Right to choice : In this, consumers cannot be forced buy any product beyond their choice.

(ii) Right to information : This ensures that all the citizens can get all the information about the functions of the government departments.

(iii) Right to redressal : To provide a simple, inexpensive, and fast mechanism for resolving consumer disputes.

(iv) Right to representation : It gives the consumers the right to represent himself or the right to advocate his interest.

(v) Right to safety : This right aims to protect consumes against the marketing of goods and services, which are hazardous to life and property.

(vi) Right to consumer education : Consumer should have knowledge about the various rights and reliefs provided by the legislations to protect their interest.


Q12. Describe some of your duties as a consumer when you visit a shopping complex in your locality.

Ans – Some duties of a consumer when he visits a shopping complex are as follow :

(i) Checking of MRP of Product

(ii) Checking of Expiry date of Product.

(iii) Ensuring that the retailer does not sell me duplicate or defective products.

(iv) Always asking for a cash memo/receipt for the goods purchased.


Q13. What legal measures were taken by the government to empower the consumers in India ?

Ans – Different legal measures were taken by the government to empower the consumers in India are as follow :

(i) Introduction of Consumer Protection Act in 1986 (COPRA) by Indian government. Under COPRA, a consumer can appeal in state and national courts, if his case has been dismissed at the district level. Thus, consumers have the right to represent themselves in consumers courts now.

(ii) In October 2005, the Right to Information Act was passed, ensuring citizens all information about the functioning of government departments.
