Question 2. Answer the following questions in about 30 words.


(i) Does India need to have more than one standard time? If yes, why do you think so?

Ans.  Yes. Because there is a variation of nearly 30 degrees in longitude extent of India which causes a time difference of nearly two hours between the easternmost and the westernmost parts of our country. There is a general understanding among the countries of the world to select the standard meridian in multiplies of 7°30′ of longitude which is not followed in case of India.


(ii) What are the implications of India having a long coastline?

Ans. Having a long coastline makes India, a physically diverse land providing occurrence of varied resources. Also long coastline provide links to India’s neighboring regions through the sea routes.


(iii) How is the latitudinal spread of India advantageous to her?

Ans. Latitudinal spread of India is responsible for large variations in land forms, climate, soil types and natural vegetation in the country.


(iv) While the sun rises earlier in the east, say Nagaland and also sets earlier, how do the watches at Kohima and New Delhi show the same time?

Ans. Kohima and New Delhi are in the same time zone, which means that they have the same time. This is possible because time zones are based on longitude, not on the position of the sun. Therefore, even though the sun rises earlier in Nagaland and also sets earlier, the watches at Kohima and New Delhi show the same time.

(i) On a graph paper, plot the number of districts in Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Meghalaya, Goa, Kerala, Haryana. Do the number of districts have some relationship with the area of the state?

Ans. Number of districts of following states are as follow :

Yes. Larger the state, more the number of districts.

Ans. Most thickly Populated: Uttar Pradesh

Least densely populated: Tripura


(iii) Find out the relationship between the area of the state and the number of districts.

Ans. Generally the state with larger area has more districts.


(iv) Identify the states with coastal boundaries.

Ans. States with coastal boundaries are as follows :

Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal .


(v) Arrange the states from west to east which have only land boundary.

Ans. Gujarat, Maharashtra, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya.

Ans. Dammam, Diu, and Puducherry.


(ii) How do you explain the variation in the area and population of NCT Delhi and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands?

Ans. NCT delhi has better economic opportunities and suitable conditions for human life as compared to Andaman and Nicobar Islands.


(iii) On a graph paper, draw a bar diagram to show the area and population of all the Union Territories.
