Ans – Derry is fourteen year old boy whose one side of his face has completely burnt. People look at him with a sense of shock or fear. He is afraid of seeing himself in the mirror. He is sick of the world he is living in. Once he comes into Mr Lamb’s garden thinking that no one lives there. He wanted a silent and lonely place so Derry go to Mr Lamb garden.

Q3. What was Mr. Lamb’s philosophy about the bees ?

Ans – Mr Lamb says that some people hear bees and say, “Bees Buzz.” But when he listens to them, he feels that they are humming which means singing. By this, Mr Lamb wants to say  that it depends on us how we interpret what we hear.

Ans – Mr Lamb tells Derry that he, like others, has two arms, two legs, two eyes and ears. He has a tongue and a brain. Thus he can do whatever he likes. And if he has a firm mind, he can even do better than others. Thus Lamb tries to remove the baseless fears of Derry.

Ans – Mr Lamb is a lonely person. He lives lonely in the house. No one came to meet him. He wants people to come to his garden and talk to him. That is why he leaves his gate always open.

Ans – Derry thought that the garden was empty place and no one lived there. He came in just to see what kind of place it was. He had no mind to steal any apples from the garden.

Ans – Derry is a victim of his own inferiority complex. The one side of his face is all burned. People avoid Derry and look at him with a sense of shock or fear. It feels Derry with a deep pain. He is afraid of seeing himself into the mirror. He avoids people and thinks that no one love him. One Day, When Derry enters into Mr Lamb garden and meet him then his life and thinking completely changed. Mr Lamb shows no shock or fear after seeing his burnt face. Rather he talks him in a loving manner. He tells Derry to never think of his burnt face. He says to Derry that you have two arms, two legs, ears, eyes, tongue and a brain. And if he has a firm minded, he can do better than others. Such word changed Derry’s thinking and bring a new change into him. Now he did not care about his looks. He wants to live the way Mr Lamb has been living. He wants to see, hear and think in his own way. Now he did not care about other peoples.


Q2. The lesson, ‘On the Face of It’, is an apt depiction of the loneliness and sense of alienation experienced by people on account of a disability. Explain.

Ans – The lesson. ‘On the Face of it’ is a story of old man named Mr Lamb and a boy named Derry. Derry face one side is all burnt. Similarly Mr Lamb one leg is lost in war. Now he has a tin leg in its place. He lives lonely into his house and garden. Kids calls him Lamey-Lamb. No one come to meet him. Derry’s condition is not much different. After burn of one side of his face, people calls him ugly and make fun of him. Everyone look at him with a shock or fear. When Mr Lamb and Derry meet in the garden, both talked each other from heart-to-heart. Derry is so impressed from Mr Lamb. Mr Lamb’s words changed his thinking completely. Now he do not care about anyone. Thus this play aptly depict the loneliness and sense of alienation experienced by people on account of a disability.


Q3. How did Derry get attracted towards Mr. Lamb ? Explain.

Ans – Derry finds Mr Lamb different from others. When Derry meet Mr Lamb in the garden, he do not show any shock or fear after see Derry’s burnt face. Rather, he talks to him in a loving manner. He welcomes him in the garden and calls him his friend. Mr Lamb says that you have two arms, two legs, ears, eyes, tongue and a brain. And if he has a firm mind, he can do better than others. Such words brings totally change in his mind. Now he become confident and does not care a fig for what he looks like. He tells Derry never to think of his burnt face. Such words of encouragement attracted Derry towards Mr Lamb.
