Ans – Yes, Dr. Sadao could be arrested on the charge of harbouring an enemy. But he was a patriot to the backbone. He did not want to give shelter to the enemy. He merely did his duty as a backbone. He did not want to give shelter to the enemy. He merely did his duty as a doctor. He told everything plainly to the old General. He was a renowned and respected citizen of his country. Therefore the possibility of his arrest was very remote.


Q2. Who was Dr. Sadao ? Where was his house ? most Important

Ans – Dr. Sadao was a famous Japanese surgeon and also a famous scientist. Dr Sadao’s house was built on a spot of the Japanese coast where as a little boy he had often played. The low, square stone house was set upon rocks well above a narrow beach that was outlined with bent pines.

Ans – One night when Sadao came home, his wife Hana open door for him. She put her arm through his and smiled affectionately. She laid her cheek against the arm. It was at this moment that both of them saw something black come out of the mists. It was a man. He flung up out of the ocean. He staggered a few steps and then fell down on his hand and knees. He crawled a little, then fell on his face and lay there. Both Sadao and Hana went running quickly to where the man lay. He lay motionless with his face in the sand. The man was wounded. Sadao turned the man’s head. They saw the face. It was an American white man.


Q2. How did Dr. Sadao rise above narrow prejudice of race and country for assisting a human being in need ? Discuss.

“If all the Japanese were like you, there wouldn’t have been a war” said Tom. Justify his statement.

Ans –  As all the doctors are trained for save life. Dr. Sadao had been trained not to let a man die if he could help it. When Dr Sadao and his wife Hana saw a man on the beach of the sea who has pistol shot in his back. So decided to help the man. When they saw the face of the man, it was an American prisoner of war. Dr Sadao didn’t want to help of the enemy. But at the same time, he could not ignore his duty as a doctor. So he took the man to his house and did all that he could do to save the life. He treated him as a wounded person who needed help. Therefore, when Tom says, “If all Japanese were like you, there wouldn’t have been a war.” He is fully justified in making this statement. Ware are born out of prejudice, hatred, narrow-mindedness against the people of other countries. And Dr Sadao had none of such bad qualities.  He once thought of handling him over to the police, but couldn’t do so. He was certain that they would kill him. So Dr Sadao helped the man to escape in a boat. In doing so, Dr Sadao rose above narrow prejudice of race and country and acted as a truly humanitarian way.


Q3. Why did Sadao Hoki go to America ? Narrate his experiences there.

Ans – When Sadao was 22, he was sent to America to learn all he could of surgery and medicine. In America, Sadao live at the house of American professor. A few other foreign students also lived there. The rooms there were very small and the food also was no good. The professor’s wife was very voluble. But Sadao continued to live there because here he meet a Japanese girl named Hana whom he wanted to love if it were at all possible. They both fell in love but did not marry in America. Sadao’s father would never have accepted her unless she had been pure in his race. After finish their studies, they cam back to Japan. Here marriage were arranged in old Japanese way.


Q4. What did the Japanese General decide to do about the injured American Soldier ?

Ans – An American prisoner of war had escaped. He had bullet shot in his back. A war was going between America and Japan and thus it was a grave crime to give shelter to the enemy. When Dr Sadao see the American man on the beach near his house. He thinks of putting the man back into the sea. But then he thinks of his duty as a doctor. So he saved life of a enemy. After health recovery of man, Dr Sadao want to get rid of the enemy. So he tell all this to the old General. The old General himself suggested a way to get rid of the American soldier. He said that he had his own private Assassins. They were very capable and made no noise. They could every have the body removed. Sadao left the General’s presence and went home, thinking over the plan. But after few days, the old General help the enemy to escape through a boat.
